Suresh is banking on his past loyalty to help him in his vice-president bid.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — A unfamiliar character, said to be privy to PKR’s and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s private affairs, has emerged to throw his hat into the ring for the party’s upcoming elections. 

Suresh Kumar, a 45-year-old PhD student and PKR backroom worker, has been involved the defending the party from both internal and external attacks — particularly when the party experienced a spate of defections and Anwar’s second sodomy trial.

For Suresh, the impending contest is a coming-out party as he emerges from the background to seek a more prominent role in PKR.

The four vice-presidents’ posts (the fifth is by appointment) is expected to be fiercely contested by at least a dozen candidates. While several are expected to be filled by incumbents like Subang MP S. Sivarasa and Gopeng MP Lee Boon Chye, others will include newcomers such as Suresh.

A minor politician compared to PKR heavyweights Sivarasa, Lee or even Padang Serai MP S. Gobalakrishnan, Suresh has indicated his intent to enter the fray.

While he might not have shared the limelight, the party rank-and-file know that he has Anwar’s ear and undertaken “special duties” for the opposition leader and the party, even for Pakatan Rakyat.

One of his early roles was that of a trusted aide who drove Anwar in his Isuzu Trooper to the Turkish embassy at 3am from a hotel in Shah Alam in June 2008, when the opposition leader feared immediate arrest over the for alleged sodomy of his former aide, Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar left the embassy a day later but only after then prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi gave his assurance that the former would not be arrested under the ISA — by which time the “escape” had already made global news.

“Before deciding to contest I asked Datuk Seri (Anwar) for his blessing. He told me to go for it,” the Suresh told The Malaysian Insider in an interview.

“He told me to campaign hard and have a winning strategy,” Suresh said. “Anwar is my political master; I learn everything from him by observing him closely.”

Splitting his time between his business and his pursuit for a doctorate in management, Suresh is one of handful of Indian leaders in PKR that Anwar has been consulting in recent years.

Suresh was involved in “handling” the problem arising from the V. Arumugam issue in Manik Urai, Kedah, when the latter resigned, fled to India and forced a by-election, which PKR eventually won.

He acted as a liaison between Anwar and the Hindraf movement, and later with some of its leaders. Suresh was also instrumental in getting Vasantha Kumar, a former ISA detainee, into PKR.

While his PKR credentials are not questioned, Suresh still faces a tough fight to win one of the four vice-presidential posts, going up against PKR heavyweights who are well-known in the country.

“I am scandal-free and have served the party in many confidential ways and I am hoping the rank-and-file see in me a leader with true potential,” Suresh said.

He has hit campaign trail early, visiting with the PKR grassroots in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Perak and Kedah, going district to district helping candidates win in the ongoing divisional elections — in return urging them to throw their support behind his bid to be vice-president.

“I also am banking on my contacts forged during the various by-elections to deliver for me,” he said.

PKR amended its constitution last year allowing all 400,000 members to vote for divisional leaders and the 25 members of the central leadership council — including the president, deputy president and four vice-presidents.

While not all members will vote, a substantial number must still be approached and persuaded to offer support before a candidate can see victory in the staggered elections which end in late November.

As a result, factionalism has become inevitable. While Suresh is not against vying for other posts, he has declared his allegiance to vice-president Azmin Ali, who is aiming for the deputy president’s post.

“I support him because he has been through thick and thin. He has stood by Anwar and the party, and deserves to be deputy president,” Suresh said.

Suresh is also hoping Azmin’s team will also consider him as a potential vice-president although a firm line-up has not emerged.

Another factor he is counting on but refuses to discuss is that nearly 35 per cent of the PKR members are Indians and are likely to nominate one of their own for the vice-presidents’ posts. Suresh is hoping to get that expected nod but has to win over majority Malay voters as well.

As a new face in the higher echelons of the PKR, Suresh is likely to face an uphill task in the upcoming polls but is hopeful his allegiance to Anwar, his support for Azmin and his own sacrifices for the party will be enough to see him through to the finish.

Beliau dan kumpulan penyokong PKR tersebut dikatakan telah mengusir Rahimi dari tempat 'press conference' dan menggagalkan sidang tersebut.

Mungkin bagi penyokong PKR Suresh adalah hero tetapi bagi rakyat ia satu gangguan terhadap kebebasan bersuara rakyat seperti Rahimi yang ingin mendapatkan keadilan untuk dirinya.

Dalam hal ini Anwar segera menafikan perkara tersebut di FB beliau di sini...

Ternyata Anwar sekali lagi ingin mengelakkan diri dari mendapat malu kerana perbuatan orang kuatnya yang mengganggu sidang media Rahimi tersebut.

Tetapi mampukah penipuan demi penipuan dibuat agar perkara sebenar tidak terbongkar kepada rakyat

Apa nak jadi ? Satu persatu pembohongan dibuat demi untuk menang dalam PRU akan datang....Tetapi satu persatu juga pembohongannya digagalkan oleh Allah walau ribuan musuh Allah berdiri di belakang Anwar membantunya...

Akhirnya semua orang tahu pengacau semalam adalah 'fanatik' Anwar yang jelas ada hubungan 'istimewa' dengan beliau...

Semua sedar golongan mengacau tersebut telah terdesak dalam mempertahankan Anwar sehingga terpaksa berlagak 'gangster' untuk menggagalkannya.

Satu lagi semua tahu PKR akan menjadi tidak ubah seperti Semangat 46 yang akan pupus selepas segala penyelewengan dan salah guna mereka terbongar lagi selepas ini.
